The dog's sense of smell is very good for many things, whether detecting changes in blood sugar or even detecting illegal drugs. But for Martina Baker, who turns out to be allergic to almost anything, her Caiomhe service dog is a savior.
It all started when the 15-year-old boy contracted a very rare condition. The mast cell activation syndrome (MCAS) makes it susceptible to allergic attacks even from the most common and everyday substances, such as water and heat. These reactions can quickly become deadly for the young woman.
For example, if Baker smells like cooking oil, he can immediately send it to anaphylactic shock. When this allergic attack occurs and you do not immediately get adequate treatment, there is a risk that you can die. He often has to wear a protective mask every time he comes out in public.
Considering the sensitive nature of the condition, a guard dog seems to be the most appropriate choice to help prevent allergic attacks. By using donations given to families, they bought him a dog named Caiomhe to become an allergic guide.
Caiomhe's sharp sense of smell allows him to sniff if Baker will attack or react to certain stimuli or triggers. Your sense of smell is so effective that it can warn you even before the owner shows any symptoms or realizes that you have smelled something that makes you allergic. Caiomhe can prevent Baker from a deadly reaction by standing in front of his path so he does not have access or encounter a stimulus.
MCAS difficulties
