The Xbox One driver is one of my favorite driver designs. He took a comfortable Xbox 360 controller, which was based on the original Xbox S driver, and fixed it. Two big changes are more accurate d-pad and support for use with a computer using a standard USB cable.
The Xbox One drivers purchased in 2015 started experiencing problems recently. The button on the left bumper does not always register the printing machine. I always click clicks, but it is not always recognized as a printing machine in the game. Obviously, this is very annoying when changing tabs on the Xbox control panel and when playing games that often use the left bumper.
This post explains the process of repairing my bumper from the Xbox One controller.
Potential problem
There are many things that can cause problems with the bumper button. Here is a short list of possible problems and how to overcome them.
Dust or dirt accumulates around the button.
This will prevent the button from being pressed correctly.
You can try to solve it by blowing compressed air on the button, and opening and cleaning the button if the air doesn't work.
A broken piece of plastic bumper
This will cause the button to not press at all.
You only have to replace the plastic part that is in contact with the original button switch.
Broken button.
This is also a possibility.
You can try the button using a continuity tester. If the tester does not register the pressed button, the button needs to be replaced.
Damaged controller board.
This is the most difficult thing to fix.
You need to find out what's wrong with the board, and fix it or buy a new controller or controller.
In my case, I have a broken switch, which needs to be replaced. It must be worn out because it's too often pressed.
Dismantling the controller
You can follow this iFixit guide on how to uninstall the driver. This is a fairly simple process after the plastic is removed around the handle.
Clean the controller
While you have the driver uninstalled, I suggest you clean it. Take all the plastic pieces and place them in the sink with warm water and dishwashing soap. After soaking the components for a few minutes, you can use an old toothbrush to clean any part of the controller.
I usually use a small bowl instead of a sink for small pieces like buttons. After you clean the plastic parts, you should rinse them and let them dry.
If you want to clean electronic components, you can use 99% isopropyl alcohol along with some q-tips. Make sure the board is completely dry before replacing it all.
Replacement bumper button switch
Replacing the bumper button is quite simple. To change the button, you will need a soldering iron, wires for desolder, solder and bumper replacement switches. You can find replacement switches on eBay, Xbox 360, and Xbox One using the same key switch. They are pretty cheap, I have a ten package for $ 5.99. I suggest you buy at least two so you can replace both buttons when you have an open driver.
Remove the old switch by heating the desoldering axis at the top of the old switch foot. Finally, you can remove the button with tweezers after adequate welding has been removed with the axis.
Then, you can put the new switch through the hole on the board and solder again. Make sure the switch is flat and as close to the board as possible, otherwise you will experience problems re-installing the controller.
With a new switch welded to the board, you can reinstall the controller.
Driver reassembly
You can follow this iFixit guide on how to dismantle the driver, but in reverse. There is also a good chance that you remember how to reinstall it after unpacking it, there are not many parts, and are very similar to other controller designs.
