Fiberglass barrels are generally durable and affordable, but accidents can occur. If you have a small chip on the surface of the bathtub, you can fix it yourself with an epoxy-based fiberglass repair kit. To get a good color combination, buy colored epoxy, dip it yourself or paint the area with waterproof epoxy paint. The end result may not be as perfect as a professional repair job, but can save you a lot of money and hassle.
The things you need :
- Rubbing alcohol
- Fabric
- Plastic packaging tape
- Rubber gloves
- Epoxy-based fiberglass repair kit
- Spatula
- Acrylic paint pigment (optional)
- Small brush
- 180 grit of sandpaper
- Epoxy paint (optional)
Warning
Always use a dust mask during epoxy sanding and keep the area ventilated well.
Clean the exfoliated area thoroughly with alcohol and cloth. Use plastic packaging tape to cover the area around the chip.
Open the window to ventilate the bathroom and turn on the air extractor if you have it. Wear rubber gloves and mix epoxy and hardener with the spatula according to the manufacturer's instructions, but don't add thickener. Store a little epoxy and hardener without mixing for later use.
Apply a small amount of epoxy to the peeled area with a small brush. This helps epoxy thicken against the fiberglass surface.
Add thickener to epoxy and stir until it reaches thick and soft consistency. To dye epoxy, add one drop of acrylic paint pigment at once and stir until it reaches the desired color. Apply epoxy to the peeling area with the spatula and soften it. Allow epoxy to heal for at least five hours or overnight.
Wear an anti-dust mask and epoxy sandpaper to get a fine layer with 180 grit sandpaper, avoiding as much area as possible. Clean the powder excess with a damp cloth.
Mix a little epoxy and hardener without thickener and apply it in the filled area to close it. Let it heal for at least five hours or overnight.
Wet the wet area filled with sandpaper 180 grits until the finish is smooth and clean the dust with a damp cloth. To paint repairs, mix epoxy paint according to the manufacturer's instructions and apply to the area with a small brush. Let the paint dry completely before using the bathtub.
