Employees often spend a lot of time fighting
Daily management board, every working day in 2019.
I wrote several publications lately about increasing stress in the workplace and several ways to deal with it. But when it comes to comments from social networks that I received about this problem, there is one element that gets more attention than the others.
This involves some statistics from the recent Korn Ferry study that analyzed the biggest stress sources in the workplace. That ... yeah, I guess you guessed it ... boss, administration, leadership ... no matter how you describe it. 35% of respondents referred to their boss as their biggest suppressor, and 80% felt that changes in leadership ", as a new direct manager or someone who is higher in the organizational structure" increased stress levels.
I was surprised by this finding? Surprised as you told me that the sun will rise in the East tomorrow. In other words, no, not at all.
Creator of difference
Anyone who has spent time studying or thinking about administration knows the importance of the relationship between managers and employees. He is a difference maker. As I wrote on the first page of the Introduction to my book, Type B Manager, "A good relationship with a manager makes bad work acceptable, but a bad relationship with a manager can make good work misery." This is very important.
You can't overstate it. Your boss influences your way of life and has a big influence on you, often everyday. How that influence is done shapes your work experience.
If you are very stressed, or just stressful at all.
What steps can you take?
So what should the employee do with a stressful boss? Often there are no simple answers, but here are some suggestions to guide you. I wrote an article last summer in 3 basic steps to dealing with a bad boss. A brief overview of the main points:
First, it's always good to try to understand your boss as best you can. Try to see everything through his eyes, and understand the problems that make you stressed. (And, in turn, what makes it send that stress!) As much as you don't feel like it, it's good to try to understand it if you get information here.
Second, give your best: do your best to try to be very necessary. This might not work, it doesn't change the dynamics of the relationship, but it will have the biggest influence as a star.
Third, if empathy and performance do not move the needle in the right direction for you, maybe it's time to choose with your feet and leave. Never benefit from suffering in silence or becoming a long-term victim. If a relationship seems very stressful, it is far better to take positive steps and take your talent elsewhere.
Additional dimensions to consider: How do you find out if a stressed and difficult boss can be reversed or a toxic terminal? In the end, you must believe your own good judgment on this, but here are some signs that you should look for. I do work in 2017, if your boss shows these 4 signs, Head For The Hills, which has more than 160,000 readers and offers advice on this matter. In that article I highlight four common features for bad bosses that might not change. Short summary:
This rarely communicates
Scruples of rattle wood (working in an ethics-free zone)
It is not responsible for actions.
Much more concerned about his career than your career.
I hope this isn't a rather dark manager profile that causes stress, but if so, choosing with your feet may be the most attractive choice.
