For international students, the MBA offers the opportunity to meet other business professionals from around the world, improve their network and gain a global business vision.
Dayris Arias's (photo) ambition is no different. Originally from Peru, he completed his bachelor's degree in economics at the prestigious Universidad del PacĂfico in Lima, and then served as a business analyst with the third airport management company in the country. webp.net-resizeimage-66_.jpg
"I lived there for five years and passed three different positions," explained Dayris. "But I really like it, I feel that after five years of focusing on an industry, I want to try something new and see what I miss."
Why is Cornell?
The choice to do an MBA is the choice that Dayris thought of since his title: "I always knew that the MBA was a good platform to have a very good global vision from all different companies and industries," he recalled. .
Whereas the application for US schools in their Act was reduced last year, it did not affect Dayris' decision. "I always consider going to the United States," he said. "Many large corporate headquarters are in the U.S., and many people tell me that if you want to focus on your career, the U.S. is a better choice."
When an old friend from an undergraduate program told me about his experience, he knew that he had found the right school in the United States for him.
"When I was thinking about things about the MBA, he told me all of his experiences with Johnson, and I really liked his voice," he recalls. "The school was very open to me even when I presented the application, the entire application process was very welcoming."
Community
At the start of the two-year MBA at Cornell in August 2018, Dayris was part of a cohort of only 280 students, 27% of whom were international. Compare this with the Harvard class of 2020, which adds to the number 930, Dayris said that Cornell offers a more intimate learning experience.
Cornell also works to ensure all participants get to know each other before school starts, something that Dayris appreciated. "What really stood out to me at Cornell was the united community, it was extraordinary and very encouraging."
In fact, participants in the two-year MBA at Cornell start one month earlier than the standard MBA program so students can participate in the Johnson Outdoor Experience (JOE), an orientation retreat in Finger Lakes in New York.
"You are divided into teams with people from your" center "group, who have joined you for the first six weeks of the class," explained Dayris. "It's a known roller coaster, we really can see our individual weaknesses and strengths."
The program also benefits from being located in Ithaca, New York, a small university town with big city services.
"If you study in New York City, you can leave your university and go straight home, but in Ithaca the good thing is that in the end people say" let's go to dinner "or" hold a meeting at our house ", Dayris explained," It's nice to have a group atmosphere after a day of learning. "
It is not surprising that students have little free time; However, Cornell is still an Ivy League school, and is ranked as the 10th best in the US. Act in 2018 by Bloomberg Businessweek, in front of institutions such as Yale SOM and NYU Stern.
"Cornell makes sure you study with A + people," said Dayris. "Everyone in my class has their own opinions and perspectives, and a surprising history and background, they are all unique in their own way."
Consultant
In the end, Dayris plans to use his Cornell Johnson MBA to transition to consultation. While the recruitment process for consultations in the US Law is Difficult, Dayris said that Cornell was available to help him.
"There is a consulting club at Cornell that is very supportive of this trip," said Dayris. "They prepare us for various interview sections, and they also teach us more about culture in various consultants, which is very important when you consider where you want to find your next social base after Cornell"
Even though Dayris was still in the early stages of her life, she was sure that she had chosen the right school.
"I really encourage Latin American students or other international students to go to Cornell," he said. "This will be an experience you will never forget."
